Caversham knocked out of BCGFL Cup

An unkind cup draw saw an under strength Caversham travel to high flying Wokingham & Emmbrook's ground for their BCGFL 1/4 final. With the game taking place on their full size first team pitch, Caversham adapted much better than previous games to the large pitch in the early parts of the game. It was a much improved defensive performance early on with some excellent goal keeping from Serena. With Grace and Maud playing in front of Lianna, Martha, Anna and Olivia, W&E created little in the first 20 minutes as Caversham ensured they did not concede early goals as per previous away games. At the other end it was hard going for Ruby, Evie, Daisy and Leonie, but both Evie and Daisy created the best early chances with some good counter attacking football. Evie put her shot wide and Daisy was bundled off the ball as she was about to pull the trigger inside the penalty area, but any thought of a penalty was quickly dismissed by the referee. That was about as good as it got for Caversham as Wokingham took control of the game. Leah swapped in for Leonnie and Niamh for Olivia, but as the Caversham defence came under pro-longed pressure the organisation became fractured and the goals came as half time approached. Had Caversham held out to half time there may have been some optimism for a cup shock, but with Wokingham ruthlessly exposing Caversham's lack of pace on the right hand side, the second half started with Caversham 3-0 down. Caversham remained committed to the cause in the second half, but with Daisy and Evie feeding off scraps and only creating half chances, Wokingham's lead never looked in danger. Caversham stood firm for the majority of the second half and it never looked likely that Wokingham would run riot, but towards the end of the game and with player of the match Lianna now pushed forward to seek a consolation, Wokingham scored their 4th to make victory certain. As heads dropped and legs tired, Wokingham finished the job with some ruthless finishing to hit two more in the final minutes.
