Ruthless finishing flatters Wokingham & Emmbrook

Wokingham & Emmbrook won a competitive game at a boggy Clayfield Copse by a 4-0 scoreline that by their own admission flattered the visitors. Caversham played well for large periods of the first half with a front four of Daisy, Evie, Ruby and Grace giving the Wokingham defenders plenty to think about. The back line of Anna, Niamh, Martha and Lianna protected player of the match Serena and with Maud and Izzy battling in midfield, clear cut chances were few and far between in the opening period. With little to chose between the teams, Wokingham caught the Caversham defence napping on a counter attack and a ruthless finish saw Wokingham take the lead. Leonnie swapped in for Anna and put is an assured performance in her best game to date for the team. Caversham continued to win a lot of midfield ball and with Daisy having an outstanding game she came close to unlocking the Wokingham defence a number of times. As the half drew to a close Ruby found herself one on one with the Wokingham keeper, but couldn't quite slide her shot past her for the equaliser in what was Caversham's best chance of the game. It was therefore really unfortunate when Wokingham then countered to marginally beat the offside trap and make the score 2-0 just before half time. Caversham came out for the second half seeking the crucial goal to get them back in the game and they enjoyed a sustained period of pressure. Lots of chances were created, the closest of which came from the best move of the game that saw 5 quick passes between Evie and Daisy open up Wokingham defence only for Evie to agonisingly smash the ball against the post with the keeper well beaten. It was a fantastic move that would have deservedly put Caversham right back in the game. Further chances fell to Grace and Daisy, but it was Wokingham who finally put the game to bed with another counter attack and then with heads dropping and legs tiring on energy sapping ground the fourth quickly followed. As the game drew to close some good goal keeping and poor finishing prevented more goals for Wokingham, but that would have been harsh on Caversham. Overall it was a good performance against a very good Wokingham team that shows Caversham continuing to improve in a very tough division.
