Caversham faced a strong Windsor team with a 100% BCGFL record in the BCGFL Cup Final at Thatcham Town FC in their final BCGFL game of the 2016/7 season. In a much anticipated fixture Caversham knew that they faced tough test to bring home the silverware. From the whistle Caversham were under pressure, but there was little to choose between the teams as the game became a midfield battle of attrition. The first real chance fell to Caversham when Daisy struck a high long distance shot into the sun that the keeper just about dealt with. It was the closest Caversham were to come in the first half, although they always looked dangerous on the counter attack. At the other end Grace, Izzy and Ruby took the midfield battle to Windsor and a well organised defence saw Niamh, Martha and Lianna take no prisoners as they protected Serena in goal. Serena pulled off a number of incredibly brave saves to ensure Caversham always remained in contention. Caversham did an excellent job in nullifying the quality players from Windsor, but the breakthrough came when for once Windsor's star player got away and punished Caversham with some ruthless finishing. Tia came on to add some pace and almost put Daisy in for the equaliser as half time approached, but as Daisy as burst through the defence the keeper was just able to gather the ball off her toe.
The second half saw Daisy swapped to make way for Evie to return and she almost scored straight from the whistle as she dribbled around the Windsor defence only to be bundled off the ball by a desperate last ditch tackle. Caversham now sensed a weakness and suddenly it was the Windsor defence under pressure. As Caversham attacked in numbers, Ruby turned the defender and her cross found an unmarked Saffron who was just unable to bring the ball under control to assure a finish. It is on such fine margins that games are won and lost, but with Daisy back in attack there was growing confidence that Caversham would find the vital equaliser. With Anna replacing Niamh in defence everything looked solid at the back, but with time running out and Caversham looking tired, Windsor's star player got away again and once again found the target with a ruthless finish to win the tie.
However, the disappointment of losing was soon replaced with pride as they collected their finalist trophies. The team were all smiles at the end having put in a good performance against strong opposition and knowing that if the rate of improvement continues they will be challengers for next year's silverware.
