Tilehurst Panthers Stripes 2 - 1 Caversham AFC

Tilehurst took the points at a soggy Victoria Recreation ground against a strong and spirited Caversham performance. Tilehurst Panthers Stripes are much improved from the team that Caversham did the double over early last season and so it proved to be in a close and competitive game. Daisy hit the post early in a game of few clear cut chances after carving out a great chance and picking her spot with a great looking finish. Evie also had a goal ruled out for off-side. Tilehurst attacked and defended well in numbers putting Caversham under pressure throughout, but outstanding performances from Martha and Grace limited their clear cut goal scoring opportunities. On the rare occasions the defense was breached, Serena was on hand with some assured goal keeping in very difficult conditions. At the other end Evie and Daisy caused problems with their counter attacking football, but chances were limited by some great Tilehurst defending. With the game hanging in the balance the Tilehurst pressure told as they took a 1-0 lead into half time. Caversham came out fighting after half time and following their best spell of the game were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Daisy took the ball and fired the free kick from distance into the roof of the net for what was an superbly executed equaliser. Now it looked like a goal from either side would win the game. Unfortunately for Caversham, a break saw their defense overloaded as they sought a winner and the Tilehurst striker was just able to get the vital touch in a scrambled finish. Although it was a disappointing result for Caversham, both sides agreed it was a great game.
