Caversham wonder goal secures point at Boyne Hill

Evie scored a wonder goal against Boyne Hill in Summerleaze to put Caversham on course for what looked to be a third win of the season. However, it was not to be as Boyne Hill battled back twice to share the points. Caversham started strongly and didn't have to wait long for the opening goal. Tia threaded a great through ball to Evie who took a touch before firing the shot into the top corner from distance. Although Caversham dominated the game with great first half performances from Izzy and player of the match Anna, who controlled the midfield, they couldn't find the decisive goals to take the game away from Boyne Hill. Daisy created a number of good chances, but couldn't quite find the back of the net. With the game 1-0 at half time and Caversham looking comfortable, Boyne Hill picked up the pressure in the second half and began to turn the game around. They were rewarded when the Caversham defence was split in a counter attack leaving the Boyne Hill striker to slot the ball past Serena as she was left one on one. However, Caversham took the lead again after some sustained pressure when Anna's goal bound shot struck a Boyne Hill defender's hand and deflected past their keeper. It was Anna's first goal for Caversham AFC and her delight was obvious for all to see. Unfortunately, it didn't prove to the winner as towards the end of the game Caversham were once again undone by a carbon copy counter attack that again left Serena one on one. With ten minutes left it was suddenly Boyne Hill that carried the threat and it was only some committed defending by Leah, Martha, Grace and Olivia that prevented Boyne Hill taking the lead. With the clock running down Serena did enough to save the game when the Caversham defence was breached again by making a brave save as the Boyne Hill striker sought a hatrick to win the game. There was still time for the referee to wave away a credible shout for a Boyne Hill penalty after a clumsy challenge brought down their striker, but with the ball having already gone out, it would have been a harsh decision as there was no intent. When the final whistle blew there was disappointment and relief in equal measure with Caversham knowing that this was a game they should have won, but also could so easily have lost.
