Caversham suffer heavy defeat

Caversham suffered their heaviest defeat for two years at the hands of Westwood Wanderers on their return to Clayfield Copse. Although Westwood are new to the age group in the BCGFL, they have clearly acquired some very physical and talented players and as Caversham's defence struggled to contain them, it was obvious that player for player the game was a mismatch. That said Caversham started brightly and were unlucky not to take the lead when Evie hit the post in the first few minutes. When Westwood took the lead a few minutes later and added a second following a mix up in the Caversham defence it looked like their forward players would run a up a cricket score. Credit to Caversham though, they battled, kept their discipline and were rewarded just before half time when the referee played a good advantage on what looked to be a foul in the penalty area against Evie. Tia picked up the lose ball and slotted it past the keeper for her 3rd goal of the season to make the score 2-1. Westwood made it 3-1 just before half time, but already the physical nature of the game was starting to take it's toll as a number of necessary substitutions for injuries disrupted Caversham's shape. In the second half Caversham played some excellent passing football and Tia had a great game running at the defence with the ball. Evie carved out a number of good chances and had a goal disallowed for off-side. Daisy tricked her way through the defence a number of times and forced the keeper into a great save from a powerful shot. However Caversham's chances were few and far between as they came up against the best defence we've seen in this age group. At the other end the Caversham defence was worked extremely hard and although they managed to supress the Westwood players the high quality of their finishing put them 4-1 up. Grace, the clear player of the match, held the defence together, but towards the end of the game Westwood's clinical finishing punished Caversham as they scored three more times at the end of the game. It was a harsh scoreline for Caversham, but also a reality check for Westwood as they clearly realised they should playing their football in the BCGFL's higher division in this age group with the quality and depth of players they have at their disposal.
