Winnersh Rangers Diamonds 2 - 1 Caversham AFC

Winnersh Rangers Diamonds secured their BCGFL Cup semi-final place in a nervy and thrilling game against Caversham AFC at Bearwood Recreation Ground. With top scorer Evie unavailable, Caversham were forced to make changes up front. Winnersh made the perfect start through a goal that Caversham were disappointed to concede. However they could have no complaints when Winnersh quickly scored a second after a superb run and finish by the same player who had scored a hatrick in the same fixture a week earlier. At this early stage it looked bleak for Caversham, but to their credit they organised the defence and midfield and began to put Winnersh back under pressure. Tia broke the defence and placed the ball across the goal, but it was just out of reach for both Daisy and Ruby who couldn't connect to tap into the empty net. Minutes later though Caversham had pulled a goal back when Daisy threaded a ball through to Tia who finished superbly to get Caversham back in the game. With the score 2-1 at half-time it was all to play for. Caversham's defence of Niamh, Helen and Olivia played superbly in the second half and nullified the Winnersh attack. This made for a quiet half for player of the match Martha in goal, but she made some good saves from a couple of corners to ensure Caversham stayed in the game. Meanwhile excellent midfield work was being done by Grace, Izzy and Ruby, but Helena and Serena stuggled to break down a strong Winnersh defence. With the game drawing to a close Izzy created a brilliant chance to take the game to extra time, but a triple block by the Winnersh defence denied her a first goal for the team. It wasn't to be for Caversham, but they can be very proud of an excellent and hard working performance for most of the game.
