The first BCGFL game for the newly reformed Caversham AFC U11s saw Caversham literally blown away as gales and lashing rain significantly impacted the game at Moors Playing Field in Thatcham. There were debuts for Martha Crowland and Helena Short who both acquitted themselves well in the crazy weather conditions. A first game away against the Autumn Cup holders was always going to be a tough test, but it wasn't helped when despite winning the coin toss Caversham weren't given the opportunity to play with the wind behind their backs in the first half. With Thatcham taking a 2-0 lead in the first few minutes from corners both blown directly into the goal, Caversham then did well to restrict the score to 3-0 at half time as they struggled to clear the ball up the pitch into the head wind. With the wind providing such a significant advantage there was cause for optimism in the second half and Helen Griebig had a fantastic battling performance in midfield which created some great link play with Daisy Miffin and Venla Rajante. However, Thatcham's quality and experience was obvious and only some brave goal keeping from Ruby Lethbridge and committed defending from Millie Staines and Martha Crowland prevented further goals. When Thatcham finally scored a 4th from another corner the heavens opened and Caversham's heads dropped. Although Thatcham thoroughly deserved the victory, a 5th goal right on the final whistle was harsh on Caversham.
